It was later transformed into a state of a corporation to improve its effectiveness and efficiency.
Its primary mandate is to provide accessible and affordable medical insurance cover to all its members and their declared dependents, i.e. spouse and children.

How to Calculate NHIF Rates
The NHIF rates and benefits calculation is based on gross income. With the introduction of new rates, the lowest contribution shall be Ksh 150 per month on monthly income up to Ksh 5,999.
While the highest contribution shall be Ksh 1,700 on a monthly income over Ksh 100,000 as shown in the table below.
NHIF Kenya also Provides Ambulance Evacuation Services to all members for the same rates.
The ambulances services will be available to members who need emergency medical treatment from their homes or in road accidents.

NHIF Rates for self-employed
Self-employed or workers in the informal sector are required by law to contribute a monthly Ksh 500 effective 1st June 2015.
Outpatient cover services included in these new NHIF rates are:
- Health and wellness education
- Post-natal and ante-natal health care
- General consultation with general medical practitioners
- Clinical counselling services
- Drugs and medicines
- Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
- Family planning
- Prescribed Laboratory Tests and Lab investigations
- Treatment, dressing and diagnostic testing
- Prescribed ultrasound diagnosis and X-ray

Hey thanks for sharing this post. The information is very helpful. I just have one question. For self-employed, can I opt to pay the maximum contribution of 1,700 KES instead of 500 KES? If yes, does making a higher contribution guarantee the beneficiary more coverage? Kindly advise.
the Kshs. 1,700/= is for those employed. to get coverage comprehensively you need to visit nearest nhif branch for more clarification
i went for my nhif card but i was told with huduma namba i cannot have my card. does this means i can use my nhif number only without a card in hospitals

NHIF does not have the registration fee,for self employed they sometimes ask you to make a 3 month contribution but to the employed the employer will remit
